Ahana Cofounders Make 2023 Data Predictions

Data Lakehouse

Open Lakehouses, End User Simplicity, Open Source Managed Services and SQL Workloads Will Dominate

SAN MATEO, Calif., Dec. 19, 2022 — Ahana’s Cofounder and Chief Executive Officer, Steven Mih and Cofounder and Chief Technology Officer, Dave Simmon predict major developments in cloud, data analytics, open lakehouses and open source in 2023.

Steven Mih, Cofounder and CEO, outlines the major trends he sees on the horizon in 2023:

  • End user experience becomes a top priority: As deep integrations of data platforms become standard, the reduced complexity will usher a focus on end user experience. The data platform will become abstracted even further to end users. Instead of worrying about the underlying engines and data structures, end users will be able to easily and seamlessly leverage powerful underlying engines for interactive, batch, real-time, streaming and ML workloads.
  • Industry accepted open lakehouse stacks will emerge: As the market further chooses open options for table formats, compute engines and interfaces, the Lakehouse version of the LAMP stack will emerge. Linux Foundation and Apache Software Foundation projects will constitute those components.
  • Open source SaaS market will shift toward open source managed services: As data and analytics workloads proliferate in the public cloud accounts, and as IT departments demand more control of their own data and applications, we’ll see the adoption of more cloud native managed services instead of full SaaS solutions.
  • Public cloud providers will make huge investments into open source software, and make more contributions back to the community: In the past cloud vendors have been accused of strip-mining OSS software projects. Cloud vendors will go on the “offensive” by contributing to open source more aggressively and even donating their own projects to open source communities.
  • SQL workloads will explode as more NLP (Natural Language Processing) and other Machine Learning (ML) applications generate SQL: While data analysts and scientists continue to uncover insights using SQL, increasingly we’ll see apps that “speak SQL” drive a large portion of the analytical compute. Natural Language Processing (NLP) applications both enable citizen data analysts and demand more compute on data platforms. Similarly, ML applications can dig into datasets in new ways which will blow through today’s level of demand for analytic compute. SQL is not only the ‘lingua franca’ of data analysis, SQL is the ‘lingua franca’ of ML and NLP too.

Dave Simmon, Co-founder and CTO, outlines a major trend he sees on the horizon in 2023:

  • Open lakehouse will more effectively augment the proprietary cloud enterprise data warehouse: As the architectural paradigm shift toward the lakehouse continues forward, the disaggregated stack will become more fully-featured data management systems from disjointed components evolving into cohesive stacks that include metadata, security and transactions.

Ahana Joins Leading Open Source Innovators in its Commitment to the Velox Open Source Project Created by Meta

Extends engineering resources and names significant contributors

San Mateo, Calif. – August 31, 2022 Ahana, the only SaaS for Presto, today announced it is strengthening its commitment to the further development of the Velox Open Source Project, created by Meta, with the dedication of more engineers and significant contributors. Ahana joined Intel and ByteDance as the project’s primary contributors when it was open sourced in 2021.

Velox is a state-of-the-art, C++ database acceleration library. It provides high-performance, reusable, and extensible data processing components, which can be used to accelerate, extend, and enhance data computation engines. It is currently integrated with more than a dozen data systems at Meta, from analytical query engines such as Presto and Spark to stream processing platforms and machine learning libraries such as PyTorch.

“Velox is poised to be another vibrant open source project created by Meta with significant industry impact. July 21 all-things Presto event features speakers from Uber, Meta, Ahana, Blinkit, Platform24, Tencent, Bytedance and more

San Mateo, Calif. – July 14, 2022 Ahana, the only SaaS for Presto, today announced its participation in PrestoCon Day, a day dedicated to all things Presto taking place virtually on Thursday, July 21, 2022. In addition to being a premier sponsor of the event, Ahana will be participating in three sessions and Ahana customer Blinkit will also be presenting its Presto use case.

Ahana and Ahana Customer Sessions at PrestoCon

July 21 at 9:35 am PT – “Free-Forever Managed Service for Presto for your Cloud-Native Open SQL Lakehouse,” by Wen Phan, Director of Product Management, Ahana

Getting started with a do-it-yourself approach to standing up an open SQL Lakehouse can be challenging and cumbersome.  Ahana Cloud Community Edition dramatically simplifies it and gives users the ability to learn and validate Presto for their open SQL Lakehouse—for free.  In this session, Wen will show how easy it is to register for, stand up, and use the Ahana Cloud Community Edition to query on top of a lakehouse.

July 21 at 10:30 am PT – “How Blinkit is Building an Open Data Lakehouse with Presto on AWS,” by Akshay Agarwal, Software Engineer, Blinkit; and Satyam Krishna, Engineering Manager, Blinkit

Blinkit, India’s leading instant delivery service, uses Presto on AWS to help them deliver on their promise of “everything delivered in 10 minutes”. In this session, Satyam and Akshay will discuss why they moved to Presto on S3 from their cloud data warehouse for more flexibility and better price performance. They’ll also share more on their open data lakehouse architecture which includes Presto as their SQL engine for ad hoc reporting, Ahana as SaaS for Presto, Apache Hudi and Iceberg to help manage transactions, and AWS S3 as their data lake.

July 21 at 11:00 am PT – “Query Execution Optimization for Broadcast Join using Replicated-Reads Strategy,” by George Wang, Principal Software Engineer, Ahana

Today Presto supports broadcast join by having a worker to fetch data from a small data source to build a hash table and then sending the entire data over the network to all other workers for hash lookup probed by large data source. This can be optimized by a new query execution strategy as source data from small tables is pulled directly by all workers which is known as replicated reads from dimension tables. This feature comes with a nice caching property given that all worker nodes N are now participating in scanning the data from remote sources. The table scan operation for dimension tables is cacheable per all worker nodes. In addition, there will be better resource utilization because the presto scheduler can now reduce the number plan fragment to execute as the same workers run tasks in parallel within a single stage to reduce data shuffles.

July 21 at 2:25 pm PT – “Presto for the Open Data Lakehouse,” panel session moderated by Eric Kavanagh, CEO, Bloor Group with Dave Simmen, CTO & Co-Founder, Ahana; Girish Baliga, Chair of Presto Foundation & Sr. Engineering Manager, Uber; Biswapesh Chattopadhyay, Tech Lead, DI Compute, Meta; and Ali LeClerc, Chair of Presto Outreach Committee and Head of Community, Ahana

Today’s digital-native companies need a modern data infra that can handle data wrangling and data-driven analytics for the ever-increasing amount of data needed to drive business. Specifically, they need to address challenges like complexity, cost, and lock-in. An Open SQL Data Lakehouse approach enables flexibility and better cost performance by leveraging open technologies and formats. Join us for this panel where leading technologists from the Presto open source project will share their vision of the SQL Data Lakehouse and why Presto is a critical component.

Ahana Announces New Security Capabilities to Bring Next Level of Security to the Data Lake

Advancements include multi-user support, deep integration with Apache Ranger, and audit support

San Mateo, Calif. – February 23, 2022 Ahana, the only SaaS for Presto, today announced significant new security features added to its Ahana Cloud for Presto managed service. They include multi-user support for Presto and Ahana, fine-grained access control for data lakes with deep Apache Ranger integration, and audit support for all access. These are in addition to the recently announced one-click integration with AWS Lake Formation, a service that makes it easy to set up a secure data lake in a matter of hours.

The data lake isn’t just the data storage it used to be. More companies are using the data lake to store business-critical data and running critical workloads on top of it, making security on that data lake even more important. With these latest security capabilities, Ahana is bringing an even more robust offering to the Open Data Lake Analytics stack with Presto at its core.

“From day one we’ve focused on building the next generation of open data lake analytics. To address the needs of today’s enterprises that leverage the data lake, we’re bringing even more advanced security features to Ahana Cloud,” said Dipti Borkar, Cofounder and Chief Product Officer, Ahana. “The challenge with data lake security is in its shared infrastructure, and as more data is shared across an organization and different workloads are run on the same data, companies need fine-grained security policies to ensure that data is accessed by the right people. With these new security features, Ahana Cloud will enable faster adoption of advanced analytics with data lakes with advanced security built in.”

“Over the past year, we’ve been thrilled with what we’ve been able to deliver to our customers. Powered by Ahana, our data platform enables us to remain lean, bringing data to consumers when they need it,” said Omar Alfarghaly, Head of Data Science, Cartona. “With advanced security and governance, we can ensure that the right people access the right data.”

New security features include:

  • Multi-user support for Presto: Data platform admins can now seamlessly manage users without complex authentication files and add or remove users for their Presto clusters. Unified user management is also extended across the Ahana platform and can be used across multiple Presto clusters. For example, a data analyst gets access to the analytics cluster but not to the data science cluster.
  • Multi-user support for Ahana: Multiple users are now supported in the Ahana platform. An admin can invite additional users via the Ahana console. This is important for growing data platform teams.
  • Apache Ranger support: Our open source plugin allows users to enable authorization in Ahana-managed Presto clusters with Apache Ranger for both the Hive Metastore or Glue Catalog queries, including fine-grained access control up to the column level across all clusters. In this newest release of the Ahana and Apache Ranger plug-in, all of the open source Presto and Apache Ranger work is now available in Ahana and it’s now incredibly easy to integrate through just a click of a button. With the Apache Ranger plugin, customers can easily add role-based authorization. Policies from Apache Ranger are also now cached in the plugin to enable little to no query time latency impact.  Previously, support for Apache Ranger was only available in open source using complicated config files.
  • Audit support: With extended Apache Ranger capabilities, Ahana customers can enable centralized auditing of user access on Ahana-managed Presto clusters for comprehensive visibility. For example, you can track when users request access to data and if those requests are approved or denied based on their permission levels.
  • AWS Lake Formation integration: Enforce AWS Lake Formation fine-grained data lake access controls with Ahana-managed Presto clusters.

“We’re seeing an increasing proportion of organizations using the cloud as their primary data lake platform to bring all of an enterprise’s raw structured and unstructured data together, realizing significant benefits such as creating a competitive advantage and helping lower operational costs,” said Matt Aslett, VP and Research Director, Ventana Research. “Capabilities such as governance mechanisms that allow for fine-grained access control remain important given the simplicity of the cloud. Innovations that allow for better data governance on the data lake, such as those Ahana has announced today, will help propel usage of more sophisticated use cases.”

Ahana Cofounders Make Data Predictions for 2022

Open Data Lake Analytics Stack, Open Source, Data Engineering and More SaaS and Containers Top the List

San Mateo, Calif. – January 5, 2022 Ahana’s Cofounder and Chief Product Officer, Dipti Borkar, and Cofounder and Chief Executive Officer, Steven Mih predict major developments in cloud, data analytics, databases and data warehousing in 2022.

The COVID-19 pandemic continues to propel businesses to make strategic data-driven shifts. Today more companies are augmenting the traditional cloud data warehouse with cloud data lakes for much greater flexibility and affordability. Combined with more Analytics and AI applications, powerful, cloud-native open source technologies are empowering data platform teams to analyze that data faster, easier and more cost-effectively in SaaS environments.

Dipti Borkar, Co-founder and Chief Product Officer, outlines the major trends she sees on the horizon in 2022:

  • OpenFlake – the Open Data Lake for Warehouse Workloads: Data warehouses like Snowflake are the new Teradata with proprietary formats. 2022 will be about the Open Data Lake Analytics stack that allows for open formats, open source, open cloud and no vendor lock-in.
  • More Open Source Behind Analytics & AI – As the momentum behind the Open Data Lake Analytics stack to power Analytics & AI applications continues to grow, we’ll see a bigger focus on leveraging Open Source to address flexibility and cost limitations from traditional enterprise data warehouses. Open source cloud-native technologies like Presto, Apache Spark, Superset, and Hudi will power AI platforms at a larger scale, opening up new use cases and workloads.
  • Database Engineering is Cool Again – With the rise of the Data Lake tide, 2022 will make database engineering cool again. The database benchmarking wars will be back and the database engineers who can build a data lake stack with data warehousing capabilities (transactions, security) but without the compromises (lock-in, cost) will win.
  • A Post-Pandemic Data-Driven Strategic Shift to Out-Of-The-Box Solutions – The pandemic has brought about massive change across every industry and the successful “pandemic” companies were able to pivot from their traditional business model. In 2022 we’ll see less time spent on managing complex, distributed systems and more time focused on delivering business-driven innovation. That means more out-of-the-box cloud solution providers that reduce cloud complexities so companies can focus on delivering value to their customers.
  • More SaaS, More Containers – When it comes to 2022, abstracting the complexities of infrastructure will be the name of the game. Containers provide scalability, portability, extensibility and availability advantages, and technologies like Kubernetes alleviate the pain around building, delivering, and scaling containerized apps. As the SaaS space continues to explode, we’ll see even more innovation in the container space.

Steven Mih, Co-founder and Chief Executive Officer, outlines a major trend he sees on the horizon in 2022:

  • Investment & Adoption of Managed Services for Open Source Will Soar – More companies will adopt managed services for open source in 2022 as more cloud-native open source technologies become mainstream (Spark, Kafka, Presto, Hudi, Superset). Open source companies offering easier-to-use, managed service versions of installed software enable companies to take advantage of these powerful systems without the resource overhead so they can focus on business-driven innovation.

Ahana Cloud for Presto Delivers Deep Integration with AWS Lake Formation Through Participation in Launch Program

Integration enables data platform teams to seamlessly integrate Presto with their existing AWS data services while providing granular security for data

San Mateo, Calif. – December 9, 2021 Ahana, the only SaaS for Presto, today announced Ahana Cloud for Presto’s deep integration with AWS Lake Formation, an Amazon Web Services, Inc. (AWS) service that makes it easy to set up a secure data lake, manage security, and provide self-service access to data with Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3). As an early partner in the launch program, this integration allows data platform teams to quickly set up a secure data lake and run ad hoc analytics on that data lake with Presto, the de facto SQL query engine for data lakes.

Amazon S3 has quickly become the de facto storage for the cloud, widely used as a data lake. As more data is stored in the data lake, query engines like Presto can directly query the data lake for analytics, opening up a broader set of Structured Query Language (SQL) use cases including reporting and dashboarding, data science, and more. Security of all this data is paramount because unlike databases, data lakes do not have built-in security and the same data can be used across multiple compute engines and technologies. This is what AWS Lake Formation solves for.

AWS Lake Formation enables users to set up a secure data lake in days. It simplifies the security on the data lake, allowing users to centrally define security, governance, and auditing policies in one place, reducing the effort in configuring policies across services and providing consistent enforcement and compliance. With this integration, AWS users can integrate Presto natively with AWS Glue, AWS Lake Formation and Amazon S3, seamlessly bringing Presto to their existing AWS stack. In addition to Presto, data platform teams will get unified governance on the data lake for many other compute engines like Apache Spark and ETL-focused managed services in addition to the already supported AWS native services like Amazon Redshift and Amazon EMR.

“We are thrilled to announce our work with AWS Lake Formation, allowing AWS Lake Formation users seamless access to Presto on their data lake,” said Dipti Borkar, Cofounder and Chief Product Officer at Ahana. “Ahana Cloud for Presto coupled with AWS Lake Formation gives customers the ability to stand up a fully secure data lake with Presto on top in a matter of hours, decreasing time to value without compromising security for today’s data platform team. We look forward to opening up even more use cases on the secure data lake with Ahana Cloud for Presto and AWS Lake Formation.”

The Ahana Cloud and AWS Lake Formation integration has already opened up new use cases for customers. One use case centers around making Presto accessible to internal data practitioners like data engineers and data scientists, who can then in turn develop downstream artifacts (e.g. models, dashboards). Another use case is exposing the data platform to external clients, which is how Ahana customer Metropolis is leveraging the integration. In Metropolis’ case, they can provide their external customers transparency into internal operational data and metrics, enabling them to provide an exceptional customer experience.

“Our business relies on providing analytics across a range of data sources for our clients, so it’s critical that we provide both a transparent and secure experience for them,” said Ameer Elkordy, Lead Data Engineer at Metropolis. “We use Amazon S3 as our data lake and Ahana Cloud for Presto for ad hoc queries on that data lake. Now, with the Ahana and AWS Lake Formation integration, we get even more granular security with data access control that’s easy to configure and native to our AWS stack. This allows us to scale analytics out to our teams without worrying about security concerns.”

Ahana Joins AWS ISV Accelerate Program to Expand Access to Its Presto Managed Service for Fast SQL on Amazon S3 Data Lakes

aws ahana color

Ahana also selected into the invite-only AWS Global Startup Program

San Mateo, Calif. – September 14, 2021 — Ahana, the Presto company, today announced it has been accepted into the AWS ISV Accelerate Program. Ahana Cloud for Presto was launched in AWS Marketplace in December. As a member of the AWS ISV Accelerate Program, Ahana will be able to drive new business and accelerate sales cycles by co-selling with AWS Account Managers who are the trusted advisors in most cases.

Ahana has also been selected into the AWS Global Startup Program, an invite-only, go-to-market program built to support startups that have raised institutional funding, achieved product-market fit, and are ready to scale.

“Traditional warehouses were not designed to hold all of a company’s data. Couple that with rising compute and storage costs associated with the warehouse, and many companies are looking for an alternative,” said Steven Mih, Cofounder and CEO, Ahana, “Open source Presto is that alternative, making it easy to run SQL queries on Amazon S3 data lakes at a much lower price-point. Using Presto as a managed service for open data lake analytics makes it easy to use SQL on Amazon S3, freeing up data platform teams for mission critical, value-add work. Ahana’s acceptance into the AWS ISV Accelerate Program and AWS Global Startup Program will allow us to be better aligned with AWS Account Managers who work closely with AWS customers, to drive adoption of Ahana Cloud for Presto and help more organizations accelerate their time to insights.”

Securonix uses Ahana Cloud for Presto for SQL analytics on their Amazon S3 data lake. They are pulling in billions of events per day, and that data needs to be searched for threats. With Ahana Cloud on AWS, Securonix customers can identify threats in real-time at a reasonable price.

“Before Presto we were using a Hadoop cluster, and the challenge was on scale…not only was it expensive but the scaling factors were not linear,” said Derrick Harcey, Chief Architect at Securonix. “The Presto engine was designed for scale, and it’s feature-built just for a query engine. Ahana Cloud on AWS made it easy for us to use Presto in the cloud.”

Ahana’s acceptance into the AWS ISV Accelerate Program enables the company to meet customer needs through collaboration with the AWS Sales organization. Collaboration with the AWS Sales team enables Ahana to provide better outcomes to customers.

Presto Company Ahana Raises $20M Series A Led By Third Point Ventures To Redefine Open Data Lake Analytics

ahana press release series a 1

Funding comes on heels of major momentum in customer and community adoption for Presto

San Mateo, Calif. – August 3, 2021 — Ahana, the SaaS for Presto company, today announced it has raised $20 million in Series A funding to transform open data lake analytics, bringing total funds raised to $24.8 million. The financing round was led by Third Point Ventures and included existing investors GV (formerly Google Ventures), Leslie Ventures, and Lux Capital. Robert Schwartz, Managing Partner, Third Point Ventures will join Ahana’s Board of Directors.

Today more companies are augmenting the traditional cloud data warehouse with cloud data lakes like AWS S3 due to its affordability and flexibility, allowing for the storage of a lot more data in different formats. But analyzing that data is challenging for data platform teams. Presto, the open source project created by Facebook and used at Uber, Twitter and thousands more, is the de facto standard for fast SQL processing on data lakes. With this investment, Ahana will continue to transform the open data lake analytics market with the only Presto SaaS by further accelerating engineering and contributions to the open source community, as well as expanding its go-to-market teams.

“We’re excited to join the exceptional team at Ahana and assist them in their evolution from rapid, early adoption to substantial market prominence. As we witness the evolution of modern analytics, we’re seeing a new stack emerge adjacent to the data warehouse. Companies need an open, flexible approach to access their data, and the data lake with Presto on top provides that,” said Robert Schwartz, Managing Partner, Third Point Ventures. “Ahana Cloud provides the foundation for this new stack, giving all platform teams the ability to easily use Presto on their data lake. With Ahana, any company can leverage the open data lake for their analytics. This is extremely powerful.”

Under the Linux Foundation’s Presto Foundation, the Presto open source project has seen massive growth just in the past six months including hundreds of thousands of pulls of the Docker Sandbox Container for Presto hosted by Ahana, over 1,000 members in global Presto meetups, and a total of ten companies that are now part of the Presto Foundation.

“From day one Ahana has focused on delivering the easiest Presto managed service for open data lake analytics in the cloud, giving data platform teams the ability to provide high performance SQL analytics on their S3 data lakes,” said Steven Mih, Cofounder and CEO, Ahana. “As more open source-based companies like Confluent and Neo4J see extreme momentum in today’s market, Ahana’s open source go-to-market coupled with its deep involvement with the Presto Foundation has positioned Ahana as the Presto company and leader in the open data lake analytics space.”

“Since its launch in June of 2020, Ahana has in a short time established itself as the Presto company, bringing a solution to market that enables any team to use Presto in the cloud for their data lake analytics,” said Mark Leslie, Managing Director, Leslie Ventures. “Couple that with the momentum we’re seeing in the Presto community, I look forward to even more from the Ahana team as they execute on their vision of the open data lake analytics stack with Presto.”

Ahana Cloud

The Presto company also shows significant product momentum with numerous accolades and industry recognition

San Mateo, Calif. – June 24, 2021 — Ahana, the Presto company, today announced major momentum in customer and community adoption for the first half of the year. Ahana Cloud for Presto has seen strong adoption across many verticals in the mid-size and enterprise markets for its easy to use and high performance cloud managed service to query AWS S3 data lakes.

“With the rapid growth of data lakes today, companies are turning to SQL query engines like Presto to get fast insights directly on their data lakes and with other data sources,” said Steven Mih, CEO of Ahana. “Presto is increasingly becoming the de facto choice for SQL queries on the data lake because of its performance and open, flexible architecture. But for most companies, leveraging Presto can be complex and resource-intensive, and that’s where Ahana can help in making it incredibly easy to get the power of Presto for your AWS S3-based open data lake analytics. The momentum we’ve seen in the Presto community coupled with Ahana customer adoption and industry accolades is a testament to how critical Presto is to unlock data insights on the now ubiquitous data lake.”

Continuing Customer Success and New Customer Wins

Ahana has continued to grow its customer base across all verticals in the mid-size and enterprise markets, including companies in the telco, FinServ, AdTech, and security industries, and today there are dozens of companies using Ahana Cloud for Presto on AWS. Recent notable additions and success stories include Securonix, Dialog, Carbon, Rev, Metropolis, Requis, and Cartona.

Earlier this year, ad tech company Carbon shared at PrestoCon why they chose Ahana Cloud for Presto to power their customer-facing dashboards and eCommerce company Cartona presented their Ahana Cloud for Presto use case. Securonix, a leading security operations and analytics company, is one of the latest companies to deploy Ahana Cloud for Presto.

Sachin Nayyer, CEO at Securonix, said at the AWS Startup Showcase featuring Ahana, “We are very excited about our partnership with Presto and Ahana because Ahana provides us the ability to cloudify Presto, in addition to being our conduit to the Presto community. We believe this is the analytics solution of the future, and with Ahana for Presto we’re able to offer our customers data that’s queryable at an extremely fast speed at very reasonable price points. That has significant benefits for our customers.”

Open Source Presto Community Momentum

March’s PrestoCon Day was the largest Presto event to date and featured sessions from Facebook on the Presto roadmap and Twitter on the RaptorX project, plus panel discussions on the Presto ecosystem and Presto, Today and Beyond.

At Percona Live Online, the biggest open source database conference in the world, the Presto community track had hundreds of attendees and featured sessions like the Kubernetes operator for Presto, how Facebook’s usage of Presto drives innovation, and many more from presenters at Facebook, Twitter, AWS and more.

Additionally, the Docker Sandbox Container for Presto hosted by Ahana has seen hundreds of thousands of pulls over the course of the year, demonstrating significant growth in Presto usage.

Global Presto meetups have grown in size to over 1,000 members across the globe in cities like New York City, London, Bangalore, Sydney, and more, and Presto Foundation membership has grown to ten companies with new members Intel and Hewlett Packard Enterprise.

“As a member of the Presto Foundation, Intel is committed to working with the Presto open source project along with Ahana, Facebook, Uber and others to drive even more innovation and community engagement,” said Arijit Bandyopadhyay, CTO – Enterprise Analytics & AI, Head of Strategy – Enterprise & Cloud, Data Platforms Group at Intel Corporation. “We look forward to continuing to build on the fantastic momentum thus far and helping even more developers and enterprises get up and running with Presto.”

“The engagement we’re seeing within the community at meetups and events like PrestoCon Day and Percona Live coupled with the usage of the Docker container are indicative of how much the Presto project continues to grow,” said Dipti Borkar, Chairperson of the Presto Foundation Outreach Committee and Cofounder and Chief Product Officer, Ahana. “As Presto continues to be the de facto query engine for the data lake, we look forward to continuing to build a robust and vibrant community around the project and expand the use cases it supports.”

Product Accolades and Industry Recognition

Ahana Announces New Capabilities for Its Presto Managed Service Including Data Lake Caching, Security and Seamless Operations

benchmark2

Caching advancements improve query performance up to 5x for complex workloads making Ahana the most advanced cloud service for Presto

San Mateo, Calif. – March 24, 2021 Ahana, the self-service analytics company for Presto, announced today at PrestoCon Day significant updates to its Ahana Cloud for Presto managed service. The major areas of focus include performance, better cluster management, ease of use, and security. One of the key features is the data lake IO caching capability that can dramatically improve query performance, reducing latencies up to 80%.

“Our latest innovations make Ahana Cloud the fastest and most advanced cloud native managed service available for Presto,” said Dipti Borkar, Cofounder and Chief Product Officer, Ahana. “We have seen that advanced capabilities like data lake IO caching can improve query performance up to 5x for real-world concurrent query workloads. This, along with our new ease of use, security and cost management advancements, continue to extend Ahana’s leadership in the market, giving data platform teams more value using the power of Presto for faster insights, easier access, and lower costs.

“We knew we wanted to use Presto to query all of our AWS data sources, but we found it challenging to manage it on our own in the cloud,” said Omar Mohamed, Data Engineer, Cartona. “Ahana Cloud made it possible for our team to deliver real-time analytics with Presto without having to worry about the complexities. We look forward to doing even more with Ahana’s latest set of capabilities.”

Ahana Cloud for Presto features new capabilities, including:

Performance improvements

  • Data lake IO Caching – Ahana Cloud for Presto is the only cloud-native managed service for Presto and with the new data lake IO caching capability, is now also the only Presto plus caching service for users. Data lake IO caching, built on the RubiX open source project, eliminates the need to read data from data lakes like AWS S3, particularly if the same data is read over and over. Today, Ahana Cloud users can easily enable data lake caching with the click of a button when creating a new Presto cluster. The rest, including attaching SSDs and sizing the cache based on the user selected instance type, is all done automatically. Ahana has also open sourced this feature for the Presto community, which will be available in the upcoming PrestoDB release.
  • Pre-tuned Presto cluster capability – New clusters now come pre-tuned with even more advanced features enabled, including the Cost-based Optimizer and Dynamic Filtering Capabilities which can improve performance, particularly for complex queries, as well as memory tuning to enable best out-of-the-box performance of Presto.

Ease of use – A range of major improvements have been added that make Ahana Cloud the easiest service for Presto on AWS.

  • Automated and versioned upgrades of Ahana Compute Plane – Versioning and upgrade infrastructure brings users disruption-free upgrades – new features are automatically made available to users.
  • Ability to deploy different instance types for Presto coordinator and workers, as well as Ahana-managed Hive Metastore Catalog – This brings users flexibility to use Presto for a range of workloads and customize resources provisioned as needed.
  • Customized IP block allocation for the Ahana-managed Virtual Private Cloud – Allows users with more restrictive networking environments to use Presto in the cloud
  • Support for asynchronous query execution with Apache Superset in the Ahana Compute Plane – Ahana manages Apache Superset so that administrators can query and validate that clusters are available for their data teams. Now they can run long running queries with Apache Superset as well. Ahana manages and automates the deployment of the infrastructure required for these query to run asynchronously to reduce the time platform teams spend on infrastructure
  • One click creation of AWS provisioning roles and policies needed with an AWS CloudFormation Template – This dramatically simplifies setting up the initial cross-account access between Ahana and the user’s AWS account.

Security

  • Significantly tighter policies and advanced AWS tagging for all Ahana-managed resources in the user’s account – Ahana’s managed service is deployed in the user’s AWS account, which enables compute to be deployed where the data is without the need for customer data to ever touch Ahana Cloud. With the latest improvements, the policies needed for Ahana management of the compute plane are even tighter and each resource managed by Ahana on behalf of the user is explicitly tagged. This makes the Ahana environment completely isolated and independent from any other user-managed resources.
  • Integration of Ahana Compute plane with AWS CloudTrail, including log validation – AWS CloudTrail is a service that enables governance, compliance, operational auditing, and risk auditing of your AWS account. Now with Ahana’s integration with CloudTrail, you can log, continuously monitor, and retain Ahana-administered account activity and actions across your AWS infrastructure.

Other new upcoming capabilities in Ahana Cloud for Presto, include:

  • Advanced security with the Apache Ranger integration – You can now use your centralized security administration for fine-grained access control to your Presto clusters. This capability has also been contributed to Presto open source, making it the first open integration for Presto and Apache Ranger.
  • Better cost management for Presto clusters – Your Presto cluster automatically reduces the number of worker nodes to a single node when the query engine is idle for a certain time. In addition, Ahana can scale clusters up and down based on CPU utilization.
  • Programmatic access to cluster management – Create, start, stop and resize your Presto clusters using our REST API.

“The convergence of the data warehouse and data lake continues to be a growing trend, and Presto is one of the few technologies that enables ad hoc analytics for a unified analytics approach,” said John Santaferraro, Research Director, Enterprise Management Associates. “Based on interviews, EMA sees the Presto open-source community as vibrant and actively accelerating the value of open source software. Ahana Cloud makes Presto accessible to data platform teams of all sizes so they can use SQL to analyze all of their different data stores.”

Together, these new capabilities help to solidify Ahana Cloud’s position as the only provider of Presto in the cloud and give platform teams of all sizes more capabilities to easily deploy Presto at scale in the cloud.

Ahana Cofounders Make Data Predictions for 2021

Ahana Cloud for PrestoDB

Open Analytics, Open Source, Multi-Cloud and Federated, Disaggregated Stack Rise to the Top

San Mateo, Calif. – January 6, 2021 Ahana’s Cofounder and Chief Product Officer, Dipti Borkar, and Cofounder and Chief Technology Officer, Dave Simmen predict major developments in cloud, data analytics, databases and data warehousing in 2021.

As the shift to the cloud and multi-cloud environments has become even greater during the past year hastened by the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, new challenges have arisen when it comes to managing data and workloads. Companies want to keep their data secure in their own accounts and environments but still leverage the cloud for analytics. They want quick analytics on their data lakes. They also want to take advantage of containers for their applications across different cloud environments.

Dipti Borkar, Co-founder and Chief Product Officer, outlines the major trends she sees on the horizon in 2021:

  • Open Source for Analytics & AINext year will see a rise in usage of analytic engines like Presto and Apache Spark for AI applications because of its open nature – open source license, open format, open interfaces, and open cloud.
  • Open Source for Open Analytics More technology companies will adopt an open source approach for analytics compared to the proprietary formats and technology lock-in that came with the traditional data warehousing. This open analytics stack uses open source Presto as the core engine; open formats such as JSON, Apache ORC, Apache Parquet and others; open interfaces such as standard JDBC / ODBC drivers to connect to any reporting / dashboarding / notebook tool and ANSI SQL compatibility; and is open cloud.
  • Containerizing Workloads for Multi-Cloud EnvironmentsAs the importance of a multi-cloud approach has gained traction over the past year, next year more companies will run container workloads in their multi-cloud environments. To do that, they’ll need their compute processing to be multi-cloud ready and containerized out of the box, so choosing a compute framework will become even more critical for these workloads. Engines like Presto, which are multi-cloud ready and container friendly, will become the core engine of these multi-cloud containerized workloads.
  • Less Complexity, More Kubernetes-ity for SaaSContainers provide scalability, portability, extensibility and availability advantages, but managing them is not seamless and, in fact, is often a headache. Kubernetes takes that pain away for building, delivering and scaling containerized apps. 2021 will bring more managed SaaS apps running on K8s, and those that are able to abstract the complexities of their platforms from users will emerge as the winners.
  • The New “In-VPC” Deployment ModelAs cloud adoption has become mainstream, companies are creating and storing the majority of their data in the cloud, especially in cost-efficient Amazon S3-based data lakes. To address data security concerns, these companies want to remain in their own Virtual Private Cloud (VPC). As a result, 2021 will bring in a new cloud-native architecture model for data-focused managed services, which I’m calling the “In-VPC” deployment model. It separates the control plane from the compute and data planes for better security and cleaner management.

Dave Simmen, Co-founder and Chief Technology Officer, outlines the major trends he sees on the horizon in 2021:

  • The Next Evolution of Analytics Brings a Federated, Disaggregated Stack – A federated, disaggregated stack that addresses the new realities of data is displacing the traditional data warehouse with its tightly coupled database. The next evolution of analytics foresees that a single database can no longer be the solution to support a wide range of analytics as data will be stored in both data lakes and a range of other databases. SQL analytics will be needed for querying both the data lake and other databases. We’ll see this new disaggregated stack become the dominant standard for analytics with SQL-based technologies like the Presto SQL query engine at the core, surrounded by notebooks like Jupyter and Zeppelin and BI tools like Tableau, PowerBI, and Looker.
  • SQL Is the New…SQL As companies shift their data infrastructure to a federated (one engine queries different sources), disaggregated (compute is separate from storage is separate from the data lake) stack, we’ll see traditional data warehousing and tightly coupled database architectures relegated to legacy workloads. But one thing will remain the same when it comes to this shift – SQL will continue to be the lingua franca for analytics. Data analysts, data engineers, data scientists and product managers along with their database admins will use SQL for analytics.

Prior to that, George was a Staff Software Engineer at IBM for over 10 years where he developed multiple features and enhancements on DB2 for z/OS.

“Presto is one of the fastest growing database engines today, as users find it has unparalleled performance for interactive, ad hoc querying,” said Steven Mih, Cofounder and CEO, Ahana.  “Since exiting stealth, we’ve accelerated momentum across the company by making significant contributions to the Presto community; building a world-class technical team of core database engineers who have run Presto deployments with over 1,000 nodes at some of the world’s most data-intensive companies; and unveiling Ahana Cloud for Presto, the first Presto-as-a-service offering. The strong investor interest we received at a step-up multiple in valuation is validation of the work we are doing. The additional funds will be used to continue expanding development, contributing to Presto open source, and hiring more engineers.”

“With data spread across many sources, particularly data lakes, a federated SQL approach is replacing the traditional data warehouse model and Presto is poised to become the new SQL query engine of choice for running across data stores,” said Brandon Reeves, Principal, Lux Capital. “Ahana is the only company to make Presto ubiquitously available via unrivaled ease of use and affordability with its managed service model, and, combined with their stellar team having deep Presto and database experience, we believe they are positioned to make a major impact on the market.”

”While Presto is one of the fastest-growing open source projects in data analytics, it is still a complicated distributed data system with extensive tuning and integration required. This tends to make Presto deployments expensive and achievable mostly by large Internet companies like Facebook, Uber and Twitter,” said Dipti Borkar, Cofounder and Chief Product Officer, Ahana. ”Organizations increasingly need self-service SQL analytics, and Ahana Cloud for Presto can now simplify and unify data analytics so users can query data directly in place across a range of data sources on AWS including Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3), Amazon Relational Database Service (Amazon RDS) and others  – without the need to move or copy the data.”

“I’ve been following the Ahana team and they are addressing my challenges of building in the cloud,” said Cal Mitchell, Database Engineer, TimeTrade. “Ahana Cloud for Presto on AWS would save me hours and days of time across the configuration, deployment and operations lifecycle. It is as easy as a cloud data warehouse but without copying all my data into it. This would allow me to innovate features instead of managing infrastructure. It would give me what I love about Presto with little operational complexity.”

Ahana Cloud for Presto offers the following:

  • Easy-to-use Ahana Console for creation, deployment and management of a multi-cluster compute plane developed with the emerging best practice of an in-virtual private cloud (VPC) deployment on AWS
  • Support for Amazon S3, Amazon RDS for MySQL, Amazon RDS for PostgreSQL, and others
  • Built-in hosted Hive Metastore that manages metadata for data stored in Amazon S3 data lakes
  • Support for user-managed Hive Metastores and Amazon Glue
  • Range of security capabilities including fully protected compute plane
  • Cloud-native highly scalable and available containerized environment deployed on Amazon EKS
  • Integration with any business intelligence and dashboarding tool or data science notebook

“Companies want ad hoc SQL analytics to enable faster data-driven innovation, but with data increasingly spread across multiple data lakes and databases in the cloud, there is just too much complexity,” said Mike Leone, senior analyst, ESG. “Ahana’s cloud native managed service for Presto has potential to offer users a fast, federated, OSS-based analytics solution with an intuitive UI that helps to simplify ramp up and ongoing operations.”

PrestoDB – The Federated SQL Query Engine

PrestoDB is a federated SQL query engine for data engineers and analysts to run interactive, ad hoc analytics on large amounts of data, which continues to grow exponentially across a wide range of data lakes and databases. As a result, data platform teams are increasingly using Presto as the de facto SQL query engine to run analytics across data sources in-place, without the need to move data. One of the fastest growing projects in the data analytics space, PrestoDB is hosted by the Linux Foundation’s Presto Foundation and is the same project running at massive scale at Facebook, Uber and Twitter. PrestoSQL, with a similar name but a different offering, is a fork that was announced in 2019.

Availability and Pricing

Ahana Cloud for Presto is now accepting sign ups here and early access is available concurrent with PrestoCon on Thursday, September 24.  General availability is expected by the end of the year. The service will initially be available for AWS, with support for Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud to be added in the future. Ahana Cloud for Presto will be elastically priced based on usage, with Pay-As-You-Go (PAYGO) and annual options via AWS Marketplace.

dave dipti steven

Former Splunk Fellow and Chief Architect & Teradata Fellow brings 30+ years of database expertise to lead technology innovation

David Simmen 1

San Mateo, CA — July 23, 2020Ahana, the SQL analytics company for Presto, today announced the appointment of David E. Simmen as Chief Technology Officer. Simmen will oversee the company’s technology strategy while driving product innovation. His extensive database experience will further accelerate Ahana’s vision of simplifying ad hoc analytics for organizations of all shapes and sizes.

“Dave has a remarkable record of innovation in distributed databases, data federation and advanced analytics. That, coupled with his over 30 years of architecting and building in the field, is nothing short of impressive,” said Steven Mih, Co-founder & CEO of Ahana. “His experience innovating distributed database technology with Splunk, Teradata and IBM provides Ahana the depth needed for truly groundbreaking development to achieve our vision of unified, federated analytics. I couldn’t be more thrilled to have Dave at the helm as CTO and Co-founder.”

Simmen joined Ahana most recently from Apple where he engineered iCloud database services. Prior to Apple, he was Chief Architect with Splunk and named the first Fellow in the company’s history. There, he built Splunk’s multi-year technical roadmap and architecture in support of enterprise customers. Prior to Splunk, Simmen was Engineering Fellow and CTO of Teradata Aster where he set the technical direction and led the architecture team that built advanced analytics engines and storage capabilities in support of big data discovery applications.

Earlier in his career, Simmen was a Senior Technical Staff Member (STSM) at IBM Research adding innovations to DB2 like the IBM Starburst SQL compiler, support for MPP and SMP, database federation, and many more. Simmen is also a named inventor on 37 U.S. patents and has 15 publications to his name including Fundamental Techniques for Order Optimization, Robust Query Processing through Progressive Optimization, and Accelerating Big Data Analytics With Collaborative Planning.

“Given the spread of data across data lakes, data warehouses, and the plethora of relational and non-relational data services being offered today, the need for unified, federated analytics is only increasing. Presto is one of the most popular federated query engines but it’s missing fundamental optimizations developed over the decades by academic researchers and industry pioneers,” said Simmen. “That needs to be applied to Presto, making it even more powerful to eventually become the heart of the unified, federated analytical stack. I look forward to working with the Ahana team to turn this vision into reality.”

“In my time with Dave at IBM’s Almaden Research Center and then with the DB2 optimizer team at Silicon Valley Laboratory, I saw firsthand his technical expertise and his broader leadership skills,” said Dr. Laura Haas, Dean of College of Information and Computer Sciences at UMass Amherst and retired IBM Fellow. Dean Haas is best known for her work on the Starburst query processor and Garlic, a federated engine.

Dean Haas continued, “His combined leadership and technical depth is unparalleled, and it’s wonderful that he has joined Ahana to drive innovation for the next generation of data federation technology for analytics. I look forward to seeing his vision come to life in this space.”

Ahana Announces Linux Foundation’s PrestoDB Now Available on AWS Marketplace and DockerHub

Presto SQL Engine

Ahana to provide community and commercial support for PrestoDB users

San Mateo, CA — June 30, 2020Ahana, the Presto-based analytics company, announced today the availability of the completely open source PrestoDB Amazon Machine Image (AMI) on the AWS Marketplace as well as a PrestoDB container on DockerHub. The PrestoDB AMI is the first and only completely open source and completely free Presto offering available on the AWS Marketplace. These free PrestoDB offerings make it significantly easier for data platform teams to get started with Presto in the cloud particularly for interactive, ad hoc analytics on S3 data lakes and other popular data sources like AWS RDS, Redshift, Amazon’s Elasticsearch service and others.

Additionally, Ahana will provide commercial support for users who require technical help and management of their container or AMI-based PrestoDB clusters.

PrestoDB is a federated SQL engine for data engineers and analysts to run interactive, ad hoc analytics on large amounts of data, which continues to grow exponentially across a wide range of data lakes and databases.

“We’re looking forward to making it easier for the Presto community to get started with Presto,” said Dipti Borkar, co-founder and Chief Product Officer at Ahana and Outreach Committee Chairwoman of the Presto Foundation. “This is the first and only fully open source version of Presto that’s available on the AWS Marketplace, and we hope to see continued growth and adoption of PrestoDB as the federated query engine of choice for analytics across data lakes and database.”

In addition to the PrestoDB AMI and container, new Presto Sandbox offerings are also available to users getting started with Presto. These include a new Sandbox AMI on the AWS Marketplace and a Sandbox container on DockerHub. They come preconfigured with the Hive Metastore catalog to allow users to query data easily from S3, MySQL and other data sources as well as with built-in data sets like the TPC-DS benchmark data.

The new AWS AMIs and container offerings are yet another way for PrestoDB users to install and get started with the software. Other options include manual installation and using Homebrew. All variations offer PrestoDB as a completely open source technology.

“Having tracked the data space for more than two decades, I’ve seen wave after wave of innovation. What Presto brings to the table is something we’ve long sought: an efficient engine for federated queries across widely disparate datasets,” noted Eric Kavanagh, CEO of The Bloor Group. “This allows organizations to retain their investments in databases, data warehouses, data lakes, and so-called lake houses, while expediting and amplifying business value. The approach Ahana is taking around making PrestoDB easier to use and providing commercial support are key pieces in helping widen the adoption of the technology.”

Two Presto offerings, one name

Despite similar names, PrestoDB and PrestoSQL are two different offerings. While other variations of Presto are available on the marketplace like the Starburst Data AMI (based on PrestoSQL), they are paid offerings with proprietary features. The PrestoDB AMI, on the other hand, is 100% open source and available for use in production immediately.

As the original project that came out of Facebook in 2013, PrestoDB is hosted under the auspices of the Linux Foundation’s Presto Foundation. The PrestoSQL fork was announced in 2019 and is backed by the Presto Software Foundation, led by the original creators of Presto who left Facebook.

Ahana to focus on growing the Presto community to simplify ad-hoc analytics with PrestoDB federated SQL engine

San Mateo, CA — June 2, 2020Ahana, the Presto-based analytics company, announced today it has raised $2.25 million in funding led by GV (formerly Google Ventures) along with participation from Leslie Ventures and other angel investors. Additionally, Ahana has joined the Linux Foundation’s Presto Foundation. Ahana will use the funding to expand its technical team and deliver Presto-based analytics products. Founded during the Coronavirus pandemic, Ahana is a remote from the start company.

Co-founded by Steven Mih (formerly Couchbase, Aviatrix, Alluxio) and Dipti Borkar (formerly IBM, Couchbase, Alluxio), Ahana brings together decades of cloud, open source, database and distributed systems experience to be the only commercial company focused on PrestoDB, the project hosted by the Linux Foundation’s Presto Foundation. Presto has become one of the fastest growing open source projects in the data analytics space since Facebook open sourced the technology in 2013.

“The data analytics market is evolving, as enterprises look for new opportunities to manage analytical data cost-effectively and at scale. There is a pronounced movement away from expensive, highly-structured data warehouses to ‘data lakes’ of raw data,” said Dave Munichiello, General Partner, GV. “We see an opportunity in companies who power simple and efficient analysis of this type of raw data and are drawn to Ahana’s vision that leverages the rapidly-growing Presto open source project.”

In 2019, Facebook donated the Presto project to the Linux Foundation to create the Presto Foundation along with founding members Uber, Twitter and Alibaba. Ahana has joined the Linux Foundation’s Presto Foundation as a premier member. Ahana plans to improve ease of use, documentation and foster growth of the community users of the PrestoDB GitHub repository. PrestoDB is the most popular Presto project based on GitHub stars as compared to forks of the project, like PrestoSQL. Only PrestoDB follows the Linux Foundation’s widely accepted approach to project governance and transparency.

“As two of our earliest members, Steven and Dipti have been strong supporters of the Presto Foundation since its launch in September 2019,” said Brian Hsieh, Head of Uber Open Source and Chairperson, Presto Foundation Governing Board. “It is our honor to welcome their new company, Ahana, to the Presto Foundation. We look forward to working together to advance our shared mission of building a collaborative, neutrally governed and open community to foster the growth of the PrestoDB ecosystem for users worldwide.”

Today’s data-driven enterprises require technologies like Presto to enable faster insights into data. Presto is a widely adopted federated SQL engine for data platform teams to perform ad-hoc querying of data in place. As the Presto market continues to grow, Ahana’s mission is to simplify ad-hoc analytics.

“Federated query engines simplify and unify data analytics on data anywhere. But of all the engines, Presto is the fastest for ad-hoc querying of data in-place and is highly extensible with its pluggable API,” said Dipti Borkar, Co-founder and Chief Product Officer, Ahana. “With data spread across many sources and in different formats, as well as the proliferation of a disaggregated compute and storage stack, the sacred data warehouse star schema is no longer in one place. Thus, a federated query engine will become the foundation of architecture to meet the needs of modern data teams.”

“At Facebook, we believe open source accelerates the pace of innovation. By sharing our code, our stack, our designs, we’re hoping to provide the foundation for companies and individuals alike to scale and build great products. On the Facebook open source team, we sometimes spin-out projects to the community so that they can grow under a neutral governance structure, with Presto being the latest example of this. We’re thrilled to see that Ahana and other companies have the opportunity to use PrestoDB to build great products and businesses,” said Amit Chopra, Facebook’s representative on the Presto Foundation Board.

“The Linux Foundation is dedicated to building sustainable, governed, open source ecosystems to greatly benefit users globally, like what we have achieved with CNCF and the Kubernetes project. Presto Foundation was created to accelerate and foster the adoption of Presto, the original project donated by Facebook,” said Chris Aniszczyk, Vice President of Developer Relations, The Linux Foundation. “We are excited to welcome Ahana to the Presto Foundation. As the first and only company focused on supporting Presto of the Presto Foundation, we look forward to their continued contributions in building a thriving Presto community.”

“There is no doubt that the future of analytics is pre-ordained by the petabyte-scale data companies like Facebook, Uber, and Twitter, who all run large clusters of PrestoDB. As the first PrestoDB company focused on simplifying ad-hoc analytics, Ahana is poised to corner this new gigantic market,” said Mark Leslie, Managing Director of Leslie Ventures, and Ahana Advisor.

“PrestoDB is exploding in popularity with users around the world. That, combined with Ahana’s vision of simplifying the ad-hoc analytics journey for users, is extremely promising,” said Bob Wiederhold, former Couchbase CEO and Ahana Advisor. “I look forward to working closely with the co-founders Steven Mih and Dipti Borkar as they rejoin the Presto Foundation and community. While various forks of the original PrestoDB project exist, only PrestoDB has true governance, transparency and vendor neutrality authenticated by the Presto Foundation, under the Linux Foundation.”
