Community Presentations
We’ve curated the latest presentations from the Presto community. Enjoy!
In this special series of interviews for TFiR Series, we talked to Biswa Chattopadhyay, Data Engineer at Facebook. Chattopadhyay is the founder of several key data infrastructure components at Google, and the primary inventor of several key patents on MapReduce, NLP to SQL and Ads optimizations. He is currently leading Data Infra Compute, Shared Foundations and various other DI initiatives at Facebook.

Apache Pinot is a real-time, distributed OLAP datastore designed to answer OLAP queries with low latency. Apache Pinot is participating in TFiR Series and we invited Kishore Gopalakrishna, Co-Creator of Apache Pinot, to talk about the project and how it fits in the Presto ecosystem.

In this special series on TFiR Series coverage, we sat down with Girish Baliga, Engineering Manager of Data Infrastructure at Uber. Girish manages Pinot, Flink, and Presto teams at Uber. He is helping the team build a comprehensive self-service real-time analytics platform to power business-critical external-facing dashboards and metrics. Girish is also the Chairman of the Presto Linux Foundation Governing Board.

In this special episode of TFiR Insights for TFiR Series (register for free), we talked to Vinoth Chandar, Creator of Apache Hudi. Apache Hudi came into existence when Chandar was working at Uber, designing its overall data architecture. His team ran into a lot of foundational gaps with the traditional data lake architectures of the time. Hudi was created as database abstraction, or data lake storage, with which you can then interact with the query from all your existing major league query engines. Chandar will be participating in a panel discussion at TFiR Series and this interview covers some of his work.

Ahana was founded as the first company focused on bringing PrestoDB-based ad hoc analytics offerings to market and working to foster growth and evangelize the Presto community. While Presto is in large-scale production deployment at large internet companies like Facebook, Uber, and Twitter, Ahana’s mission is to simplify ad hoc analytics for organizations of all shapes and sizes.
Dipti Borkar, Co-Founder & Chief Product Officer at Ahana

In this session, Twitter engineer Beinan Wang will share how they use Presto at scale with over 3K Presto workers and 10 million queries and a highly-scalable query predictor service. At Twitter, this service helps improve the performance of Presto clusters and provides expected execution statistics on Business Intelligence dashboards.
Beinan Wang, Sr. Software Engineer, Twitter

It is driving the rise of Amazon S3-based data lakes and on-demand cloud computing. In this session you’ll learn how #Ahana Cloud, the only managed service for Presto, simplifies Presto deployment & management on #AWS using #Kubernetes so data platforms teams of any size can use it.
Gary Stafford, Solution Architect, AWS and Dipti Borkar, Co-Founder & Chief Product Officer at Ahana

The session will discuss how to set up, run, and #scale Presto at your organization. You will learn about configuring data sources, memory requirements and monitoring, in addition to how to access the metadata information and get run time information by queries as well as through the admin UI. In case you need to see the live plan, there will be methods shown and explained. We’ll also cover some of the tuning mechanisms for Presto. By the end of this session you’ll be able to handle #PrestoDB in large deployments.
Ravi Shankar, Chief Consultant, PassionBytes

Today it has grown to support many users and use cases including ad hoc query, data lake analytics, and federated querying. In this session, we will give an overview on Presto including architecture and how it works, the problems it solves, and most common use cases. We’ll also share the latest innovation in the project as well as what’s on the roadmap.
Tim Meehan, Software Engineer, Facebook/ Chair of TSC Presto Foundation and Dipti Borkar, Co-Founder & Chief Product Officer at Ahana

This session will be a walkthrough of provisioning Presto in K8s using Presto Operator. The advanced features of Presto Operator like HTTPS support, additional volumes support, autoscaling and graceful shutdown of workers will also be discussed. Future work and areas where the community can contribute will be discussed too.
Hemant Bhanawat, Engineer at YugabyteDB

Presto at Facebook has evolved significantly since its inception in 2012. In this session, Ariel will discuss this evolution including fundamental architectural improvements on scale and efficiency, the business cases that drive improvements like these, how the Presto use cases at Facebook have grown (and what they are), and how this all is balanced with features that the Presto community looks for. You’ll learn how a company like Facebook thinks about #Presto, how it can be used, and where it’s going.
Ariel Weisberg, Software Engineer, Facebook
